NEW YORK, NY—January 13, 2015—The American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science is pleased to announce the award of $700,000 by the U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) American Schools and Hospitals Abroad (ASHA) program to support student training at the Feinberg Graduate School (FGS) at the Weizmann Institute of Science, in Rehovot, Israel. The award, made to the Trustees of the Feinberg Graduate School, will help the school improve and develop instructional and research activities in genome-based biomedicine and other important academic programs.
“We are proud to have this long-standing affiliation with USAID,” Marshall S. Levin, Executive Vice President & CEO of the American Committee for the Weizmann Institute, said. “This grant enables us to promote science for the benefit of humanity not only in Israel, but through the Middle East region and across the globe.”
“We are grateful for this generous grant from ASHA which will help the Feinberg Graduate School enrich its activities and purchase scientific equipment critical for advancing important avenues of investigation in basic research,” Prof. Irit Sagi, Dean of the FGS, said.
The Feinberg Graduate School is one of 34 organizations to receive new grants from the USAID/ASHA program. The projects, spanning 24 countries, are funded through a competitive annual grant and directly support schools, libraries, and medical centers outside the United States that share universal values, such as empowering women and inclusive societies, as well as promoting innovation and entrepreneurship, while advancing best practices in healthcare and education. ASHA is a global program, with grants during the course of its history to more than 270 institutions in 79 countries.
ASHA grants have helped the Feinberg Graduate School to develop and improve educational and research activities for its students in many areas including biology, chemistry, physics, math and computer science, and science teaching.
